Sri Lanka Baby…

So Christmas and New Year 2018 was meant to be spent in South Africa, but due to a trip already planned in 2019, we decided to choose somewhere else and we were craving Winter sun so much that we opted for Sri Lanka.

Luckily, I had friends who had been previously and sent me their itinerary’s, which was so helpful for us when knowing where to go.

We hired a driver for our entire trip, this was super helpful as he made sure we got to see a lot of places that you wouldn’t know about otherwise, he also took us to lots of quirky local restaurants and spas that we never would have found on our own.

Us with our driver

Our first stop was Heritance Kandalama, a hotel on a beautiful lake that is so remote. This is a real honeymoon hotel and it’s a bucket lister in itself. If you ever get the chance to stay here, you must go! It’s a special eco hotel, with the forest that grows over it making it so beautiful. I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s also right nearby to Lion Rock/Sigiriya Rock which we wanted to climb whilst we were there. It’s a beautiful climb with monkeys absolutely everywhere!

After two nights Sigiriya/Kandalama we headed down to Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s main cities, it’s a pretty crazy place with lots of Tea Plantations everywhere. Our hotel again was absolutely gorgeous and felt like we were right in the middle of the jungle.

From Kandy we headed to the famous Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary on our way to our next destination. The sanctuary was so cute and has three generations of family elephants where it has been there so long, this is a must do whilst in Sri Lanka, you can feed the elephants and see them bathed too which is pretty amazing. Just don’t go here to eat as it’s pretty awful!

From Pinnawala, we headed to the capital city of Columbo, to chill for a few days over Christmas. It was so perfect and exactly what we needed.

If you plan to go to Sri Lanka, feel free to ask me anything. I would say always hire a driver as they know the best places to take you, be prepared to spend hours in the car as it’s a big place and the driving is absolutely CRAZY so it takes a while to get from A to B. Finally, if you go, make sure you go to the Maldives as well, as it’s super close and makes sense to do both while you’re over that way. x
